Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of self express training on assertiveness, interpersonal relations and coping strategies of patients with chronic schizophrenia living in the community.

Methods: This study employed a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Thirty-three participants were selected from the enrolled members of a community mental health center who were patients with chronic schizophrenia, and they were divided into an experimental group(18) and control group(15). The experimental group completed self express training that consisted of an 8 session program, once a week over 8-weeks.

Results: The result indicated that significant differences are shown in assertiveness and coping strategies between the experimental group and control group.

Conclusion: Self express training is effective on increasing assertiveness and positive coping of patients with chronic schizophrenia living in the community.
